Spring Boat Prep: 6 Things You Need to Do Before Launch Day
By Blue Vista Marine Supply
Spring is finally here, and that means it’s time to bring your boat out of hibernation and get it ready for another season on the water. Before you launch, make sure your vessel is safe, clean, and running strong. Here are six key steps every boat owner should take before the first trip of the year.
1.
Inspect Your Hull and Propeller
Start with a full walkaround. Check for cracks, blisters, or damage to the hull and inspect your propeller for dents, warping, or fishing line. A damaged prop can reduce performance or even harm your engine.
2.
Reinstall and Recharge Your Battery
After months in storage, your battery needs attention. Charge it fully and check terminals for corrosion. Use dielectric grease on connections and make sure it’s secured properly before starting the engine.
3.
Check Fluids and Filters
Inspect and top off your engine oil, power steering, trim fluid, and coolant. Replace any filters that weren’t changed during winterization, and confirm there are no leaks.
4.
Test All Electronics and Lights
Flip every switch and check every light. Test your bilge pump, GPS, depth finder, horn, and navigation lights. Replace bulbs or fuses as needed — now’s the time to upgrade to LED if you haven’t already.
5.
Inspect Safety Equipment
Make sure your life jackets are in good condition and Coast Guard-approved. Replace expired flares, check your fire extinguisher pressure, and confirm your first aid kit is stocked and dry.
6.
Clean, Polish, and Protect
Give your boat a full washdown, clean the vinyl, and apply UV protectant to your seats and trim. A clean boat not only looks better but helps prevent mildew and damage.
