Getting Ready For Winter

How to Winterize Your Boat: 7 Key Steps to Protect Your Investment

By Blue Vista Marine Supply

As boating season winds down and cold weather sets in, properly winterizing your boat is one of the most important things you can do to extend its life and avoid costly repairs. At Blue Vista Marine, we’re here to guide you through the process and supply everything you need along the way.

1.

Flush & Stabilize Your Fuel System

Run your engine to warm it up, then add fuel stabilizer to your tank. Run the engine again for a few minutes to allow the stabilizer to circulate. This prevents fuel degradation and carburetor gumming during storage.

2.

Drain the Engine & Cooling System

Remove any residual water from your engine to prevent freezing and cracking. Use compressed air or gravity drain plugs. Then fill the cooling system with non-toxic marine antifreeze.

3.

Change the Oil and Filters

Used oil contains moisture and contaminants that can corrode engine parts. Change your engine oil and filters before storing the boat to keep internal components protected over the winter.

4.

Fog the Engine (for Gas Motors)

Fogging oil protects the engine’s internal parts from corrosion. Spray it into the carburetor or through spark plug holes while the engine runs — follow your manufacturer’s instructions for the correct process.

5.

Disconnect the Battery & Store It Indoors

Remove your battery, charge it fully, and store it in a cool, dry place. Periodically recharge it during the off-season to maintain its lifespan.

6.

Clean, Dry & Cover Everything

Clean your hull, deck, and interior thoroughly. Remove any gear that could hold moisture. Once the boat is dry, cover it with a fitted boat cover or shrink wrap to protect it from snow, rain, and UV damage.
